TEACHERS & STUDENTS - INDICATORS

To answer the questions posed in the previous section, teacher preparation programs and researchers should assemble the following indicators that can allow them to assess effects:

  • The percentage of teacher education programs who have a "X" percentage of their graduates teach in VAM-assessed subject areas;
  • The percentage of teachers (who are certified in subject areas that can be assessed using VAM) from each teacher education program who enter teaching and produce student learning gains (with a predetermined benchmark established);
  • The percentage of teachers from each teacher education program who create more demanding assignments for their students, who then produce more complex, sophisticated, and complete responses; and
  • The percentage of teachers from each teacher education program who produce student learning gains and more sophisticated assignments and student work products, and who have the necessary supports (e.g., induction, working conditions) for effective teaching.
